This 5-week course will focus on secrets of the Illustration
An art form that illustrates a concept or visualizes an idea. Using a variety of drawing, color, design, and composition techniques students will explore many ways of conveying different moods and scenarios in visual form.
About the Course:
This 5-week course will focus on secrets of the Illustration – an art form that illustrates a concept or visualizes an idea. Using a variety of drawing, color, design, and composition techniques students will explore many ways of conveying different moods and scenarios in visual form. Inspired by PAFA’s permanent collection, students will create illustrations that stand alone as art pieces exercising their artistic freedom, while practicing and enhancing their illustration techniques. The course ends with a virtual art exhibition highlighting students’ work.
Each student will receive an Art Toolbox, by mail with specialized illustration supplies.* (* must register at least 10 days before the class start day to ensure timely delivery.)
Expected Outcomes:
- Students will gain an understanding of communication through pictorial means.
- Students will express abstract concepts through pictorial symbols. Students will present preliminary work that clearly communicates their objectives.
- Students will balance lettering and imagery. Students will demonstrate the use of critical thinking, creativity, and a personal voice.

The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) is the first and oldest museum and art school in the United States. It offers undergraduate, graduate, continuing education, pre-college, and youth and family programs for artists and art lovers of all ages and skill levels who wat to learn about and make art.
About the Educator:
Class is developed and taught by professional art educators of diverse artistic and cultural backgrounds. They all have experience developing and implementing educational programs for different age groups and abilities, virtually and in-person.
