Through the Beyond School Walls Program, Comcast and Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern Pennsylvania are changing the lives of children in Philadelphia.
Comcast has joined the Satell Institute Collective Force by making a four-year pledge to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a nonprofit that makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”). The children are 7 through 18 years of age. Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern Pennsylvania is the nation’s third largest Big Brothers Big Sisters agency, and operates in Philadelphia, Montgomery, Chester, and Delaware Counties.
Comcast has worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters for about a decade through the Beyond School Walls (BSW) workplace mentoring program. Comcast works with students from the Potter-Thomas Elementary School in North Philadelphia and hosts the “Littles” at least twice a month at the Comcast Center in Philadelphia for one-to-one mentoring sessions. Not only does the Comcast Beyond School Walls program provide “Littles” with an admirable role-model, but the program has also resulted in significant gains in educational expectations and social acceptance. In fact, 87% of Comcast mentees maintained or improved in outcomes related to educational expectations.
